NCA Annual AGM and Lecture, Royal Grammar School, Newcastle, Friday, September 29, 2017

The NCA held its Annual AGM and Lecture at the Royal Grammar School, Newcastle upon Tyne, on September 29. 32 members and guests attended the Annual Lecture, along with 23 students from the RGS, with their teachers. After an delicious buffet supplied by the Boldon Farmhouse Kitchen (with wines from Michael Jobling), we were treated to an excellent lecture by Professor Paul Cartledge on the topic, ‘‘Back to the Future? 10 Things You Really Ought to Know about Democracy in Ancient Greece’.  A distinguished ancient historian and expert on Sparta, Professor Cartledge, a Fellow of Clare College, was elected to the A. G. Leventis Professorship of Greek Culture at Cambridge in 2008, a position from which he retired at the end of September 2014. His latest book, ‘Democracy: A Life’ (New York, NY: Oxford University Press, 2016) has been very well received.
