Spring Outing 2019, Bowes Museum

Our spring outing this year, on Saturday, April 27, took us to the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle. 29 members and guests attended, and the event was ably arranged by NCA committee member, Professor Gilbert Cockton, a Friend of the Bowes Museum. We were welcomed at the start by the Friends of the Bowes Museum, Hon. Treasurer, Jonathan Peacock, Vice-President, Fiona Turnbull, and Chairman, Joanna Tait, and were treated to coffee and biscuits in the impressive Jubilee Room.

After coffee, we were split into two alternating groups for tours of the special ceramics and fashion collections respectively, and these were conducted by Dr Howard Coutts and Professor Cockton. Both tours were excellent. Lightweight, portable gallery stools were available, and several members made use of them.

After the tours, we reconvened in the Jubilee Room at 12.30 for a sandwich and soup lunch at which Joanna Tait and Howard Coutts joined us. Following lunch, we watched the silver swan perform at its traditional time of 2.00 pm, and people used the remaining time to explore the Museum on their own.

Altogether a delightful way to spend a Saturday in springtime!
